About TIRF:
The mission of the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) is to
reduce traffic related deaths and injuries. It achieves its mission by designing, promoting and
implementing effective programs and policies, based on sound research.
TIRF is a national, independent road safety institute. Since its
inception in 1964, TIRF has become internationally recognized for
its accomplishments in a wide range of subject areas related to identifying
the causes of road crashes and developing programs and policies to address
them effectively.
As a registered charity, TIRF receives support both in the form of
grants and contracts --earmarked for specific projects -- and sustaining
donations to provide services for the public.
TIRF is governed by a Board of Directors from the public and private
sectors in Canada and the United States.
The staff includes professional research scientists and support personnel.
TIRF also has research associates in Canadian and U.S. universities
and has strategic partnerships with international research agencies that
greatly expand its scientific and technical expertise.
TIRF maintains a contemporary specialized library on road safety
and has direct on-line access to related library facilities in North America
and elsewhere. TIRF has developed and maintains several extensive
databases, including the national fatality database (funded by Transport
Canada and the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators). TIRF
operates from facilities that use modern electronic office, computer and
research equipment.
TIRF has become a world leader in research, evaluation and policy
development in many areas: from driver licensing and improvement to motorcycle
safety, from driver education and training to assessment and treatment of
impaired driving offenders, from elderly road users to bicycle safety. It
has received international acclaim and awards for work in the area of young
and novice drivers as well as alcohol, drugs and traffic safety.
